What is Triple DES?

Triple DES (3DES) is a symmetric-key block cipher, which applies the DES cipher algorithm three times to each data block. It was designed to provide a relatively simple method of increasing the key size of DES to protect against brute-force attacks.

Usage Status

While more secure than standard DES, 3DES is being phased out in favor of the more efficient and secure AES. NIST has officially deprecated 3DES for all new applications since 2017.
