What is SHA-3?
SHA-3 (Secure Hash Algorithm 3) is the latest member of the Secure Hash Algorithm family of standards, released by NIST in 2015. Unlike SHA-2, which uses a Merkle-Damgård construction, SHA-3 is based on a sponge construction (specifically Keccak).
Why Use SHA-3?
While SHA-2 is still considered secure, SHA-3 provides a different mathematical approach, making it a backup in case a vulnerability is found in the SHA-2 family. It's also resistant to length extension attacks by design.
